Skoda-Volkswagen’s Bold Move: New 7-Seater SUV and Hybrid Powertrains in the Works!

Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVIPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, is on the brink of a significant investment and expansion phase in India. The German automotive giant is actively exploring new vehicle architectures in collaboration with various partners, with a keen interest in electric vehicles for the Indian market.

Industry sources reveal that Skoda-Volkswagen is in discussions to localize the MQB A0 37 platform. This larger and wider platform, known for producing models like the third-generation Octavia and Mk 7 VW Golf, offers the potential to manufacture C-segment vehicles. Currently, the Kushaq and Taigun models are built on the smaller MQB A0 27 platform, which has certain limitations in terms of length and width, impacting the rear seat space.

Electric Car and SUV Sales Drop 20 Percent in June 2024

One of the notable shortcomings of the Kushaq and Taigun is their narrower back seats, a result of safety margins incorporated in the design to excel in side-impact crash tests. The MQB A0 37 platform, being larger, would address these space constraints, providing more design flexibility. This platform could also support a 7-seater SUV, a segment with growing demand in India. However, adopting the MQB A0 37 platform requires significant investment to update its first-generation electrical and electronic architecture, crucial for modern car connectivity, software, and ADAS requirements.

Additionally, the MQB A0 37 is compatible with hybrid powertrains, aligning with government incentives for cleaner vehicle alternatives. Skoda-Volkswagen is exploring four new models on this platform: the next-generation Slavia, Virtus, Kushaq, and Taigun. These vehicles are expected to launch between 2027 and 2030, following the approval of the next investment phase for India.

The Volkswagen Group is contemplating a substantial investment of at least a billion Euros (over Rs 9,000 crore), potentially in partnership with other entities. The company is also interested in participating in India’s new EV policy, which requires a minimum investment of Euro 400 million (about Rs 3,650 crore). The outcome of these discussions will significantly influence their future plans and market strategies in India.
