Shocking News: BMW Halts Production of 6 Series GT in India!
Controversial Move: BMW Replaces Popular 6 Series GT with New 5 Series in India
BMW has stopped producing the 6 Series GT in India after introducing the new long-wheelbase 5 Series, targeting the same customer base.
BMW has officially discontinued the 6 Series GT in India, a move that follows the introduction of the new long-wheelbase 5 Series. This decision, while not unexpected, signifies BMW’s strategic shift to cater to the same customer segment previously served by both the 5 and 6 Series GT. The 6 Series GT, which was BMW’s second highest-selling sedan in the fiscal year 2024, played a crucial role in convincing the automaker to bring the new 5 Series in its long-wheelbase (LWB) format to the Indian market.
The new 5 Series aims to fill the void left by the 6 Series GT, which sold an impressive 1,428 units in FY2024, surpassing the previous generation 5 Series’ sales of 1,059 units. The success of the long-wheelbase format is evident, as chauffeur-driven buyers prefer the additional space and legroom. This format has been well-received in models like the 3 Series Gran Limousine and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Introduced in 2018 and facelifted in 2021, the 6 Series GT offered both a 258hp, 2.0-liter petrol engine and a 190hp, 2.0-liter diesel engine. While the new 5 Series currently comes with a 2.0-liter petrol engine, a diesel variant will be available soon, catering to a broader customer base. Additionally, the high-performance M5 variant with a 727hp, plug-in hybrid V8 engine is expected to arrive in India.
BMW’s current sedan lineup in India now includes the 2 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series, with the 5 and 7 Series also available in electric versions, alongside the i4 sedan.
